The evacuees to whom we distributed bedding were very pleased with the new futons and said they slept very well.
In addition, today we also proceeded to introduce cardboard beds. The people at the evacuation center helped us. They were surprised at how sturdy the cardboard beds were.
In the afternoon, a support group from Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, which is volunteering in Nanao City, gave us a futon and mattress pad for a room used as an isolation room in the event of an outbreak of infectious disease patients. We were contracted by two other organizations to transport the items from Nanao City to Suzu City. Although they are not a medical team, they have been involved in many relief activities in the affected areas. We are happy to be able to support the victims together.
Today, we brought futons to other evacuation centers. They were very much looking forward to it and everyone was full of smiles.
There is a person in the shelter who is paralyzed on the left side of his body after a stroke. When I suggested that he take a shower installed by the Self-Defense Forces, he was very pleased. However, he was a little embarrassed…he had been sobbing since morning, and every time he saw the HuMA nurse’s face, he said, “I’m taking a shower at noon today, aren’t I?” We could tell that he was really looking forward to it.
His daughter and wife began assisted bathing him. Originally, he wanted to wear regular underwear, but here he is wearing rehabilitation pants. When we handed him a pair of disposable boxer shorts that were donated, he looked very happy. He was wearing clean clothes that his daughter had washed for him, and his hair was done up neatly, and he looked very comfortable.
We wanted to get them back to their normal lives as soon as possible, and we wanted to do what we could to bring them as close to their normal lives as possible.
We really appreciate the cooperation between support groups! | Cardboard beds are set up today with everyone’s cooperation. |
