The importance of listening and being mindful

We went around the evacuation centers. When HuMA staff sat down to talk with evacuees, many of them told us things they had not been able to speak out before, such as the collapse of their homes and how they feel about it.

In the afternoon, a home evacuee came to see us. As the HuMA doctor continued to talk to the person calmly, we found out that she has actually been living in a house where all lifelines have been cut off for less than two months. Two hours later, we coordinated a home visit with a staff from the welfare department of the city of Suzu, so that we could connect the home evacuee with a team of public health nurses tomorrow.

It was a day when we were able to reaffirm the importance of listening and being close to people, even if only for a short time.
