Disaster rescue dog comes to school

The Disaster Rescue Dog Program, a joint project with Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), was held. It was an event where participants could meet the disaster rescue dogs that actually worked in this area during the initial stages of the recent disaster. Due to rainy weather, the event was held in the gymnasium of an elementary school.

The explanation about rescue dogs was given first to the elementary school students and evacuees. Then, Roger the rescue dog and his handler demonstrated how they search for people in need of rescue. Not only the elementary school students but also the HuMA members were very impressed by Mr. Roger.

“The most important thing for a rescue dog is to love people. For a rescue dog, finding people is the same as finding someone it loves. So, if rescue dogs do not love people, their activities will not work.” We were deeply moved when the staff said so.

A mother who participated with her child said, “My child loves dogs, so I was happy to see him jumping up and down and being happy.” We were happy to hear that too.

Thank you PWJ for your cooperation.
