Some evacuees originally required nursing care in the shelters, and HuMA has been providing assistance with bathing. Nurses working from the perspective of helping evacuees stay safe, comfortable, and healthy collaborated with the Self-Defense Forces and the Japan Disaster Rehabilitation Assistance Team (JRAT) to work together on ways to make it easier for evacuees to enter the SDF’s elevated bathtubs.
The proposal to install handrails in the baths started with HuMA, but we explained to the SDF that it would be formally coordinated with the JRAT. The SDF bath was originally designed for agile people like SDF personnel, so there were no handrails installed. The SDF personnel were happy for the evacuees to be a great help.
This is a case of successful collaboration with the JRAT on improving the functionality of the specialists. In the future, we hope to obtain feedback from evacuees on the effectiveness of the handrails.
