Temporary toilets have been added to the evacuation center’s elementary and junior high schools. These multipurpose toilets with slopes will first be made available to a certain limited number of users. During the installation, members of the Japan Association for Disaster Rehabilitation Assistance Team (JRAT) in Hiroshima also visited the site and gave us advice on what kind of ADLs would be best suited for use. Then, together with Yokohama City public health nurses, we interviewed people in the evacuation centers about their toilet needs. Some of the evacuees looked forward to using the new toilets, saying, “I’ve already seen them.”
As for actual difficulties, the subject still has difficulty in climbing up and down the steps in front of the toilet and getting up from the toilet seat, and some of them stand up using the toilet paper holder as a support. We have picked up the subject in order to maintain his/her range of activities safely without decreasing his/her existing ADLs. We hope that by distributing the use of the toilet, problems such as clogging of existing toilets will decrease. We will open a trial tomorrow and ask for feedback.
During our rounds of the shelters, we spoke with each person one at a time. Generally, no one had any health or physical problems, and basically all were continuing to take their medications, which led to no new consultations or doctor visits. We did discuss living environment such as beds, medication, dental checkups, and blood pressure concerns. We explained the situation to them as appropriate. In the afternoon, the Shizuoka Prefecture Japan Dental Alliance Team (JDAT) visited for dental consultations. We also provided brief assistance in environmental maintenance. A total of four people, including children, were seen and consulted.
